What is a Casino?
A casino is an establishment for certain types of gambling. The name is derived from the Latin caino, meaning “gambling house”. Casinos are most commonly built near or combined with hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail shopping, cruise ships, and other tourist attractions. Some casinos are also known for hosting live entertainment events such as musical performances and stand-up comedy.
Some casinos feature a game of chance, while others combine elements of skill such as poker. Most games have a mathematical expectation that favors the house over the player, and this is commonly referred to as the house edge. In games that involve a skill element, the house may earn money from the players via a commission, known as rake.
While most of the world’s most famous casinos can be found in cities such as Las Vegas, Monaco, and Singapore, there are a number of smaller but no less extravagant locations. Many of these casinos offer a combination of high stakes gambling and luxury, with the best providing opulent living quarters as well as roulette wheels and blackjack tables.
The MGM Grand on the Las Vegas strip is one such casino and features 60 large plasma TV’s where you can bet on American football, boxing, and soccer. The MGM also has a huge variety of slot machines and table games. The hotel was even featured in the 2001 film Ocean’s Eleven. The Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, is the largest casino in America. It features 4.7 million square feet of gaming space and is operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Indian tribe.
